Story  ..The film begins with the woodcarving Geppetto living peacefully in Italy with his son Carlo during the outbreak of World War I. While helping out at his local church, Geppetto sends Carlo out to retrieve a flawless pine cone, but Carlo immediately gets killed by a falling bomb that destroys the church. Geppetto manages to survive, but spends the next twenty years mourning the loss of Carlo and honors his memory by planting the pine cone near his grave and in his grief, becomes an alcoholic. An anthropomorphic cricket named Sebastian takes up residence in the pine tree. However, Geppetto cuts down the pine tree in a fit of drunken rage and plans to make a new son out of the tree. He brings it back to his workshop and carves a puppet out of it but passes out drunk. Suddenly, a bluish fairy named the Wood Sprite comes into his shop and decides to bring the puppet to life and names him Pinocchio. She meets Sebastian and in exchange for guiding Pinocchio, she will grant him a wish, of which he intends to use to become famous. Source
